China expels Canadian diplomat in tit-for-tat response

Updated: Jun 26, 2023

We now know what the “serious consequences” are for kicking out the Chinese diplomat who threatened at least one Canadian politician. China said it was deploying a “reciprocal countermeasure to Canada’s unscrupulous move. Is there more to come? Let’s talk about that ... as the facts matter.

It did not take long for relations to settle down after the two Michaels’ affair so why would this situation be looked on as being more explosive? Oh, sorry, I forgot, the Liberal government did not take any action against the Chinese for kidnapping two of our citizens.

The diplomat Zhao Wei has five days to leave the country, but right now, no one seems to know where he is.

In the meantime, our Liberal politicians continue to put up a firm face. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said in a statement “Canada would not tolerate any form of foreign interference in our internal affairs.” The facts matter: they knew about this issue for almost 4 years and let it continue. Action speaks much louder than words. We all know how politicians spin doctor with their words.

CSIS brought the issue of Chinese interference to the Liberal government as early as 2021 and nothing was done about it. Actions speak louder than words. Now, they are trying to dig themselves out of another deep hole and one that is not personal to Trudeau, but affects all Canadians.

“In its response, China said that Canada’s action has “seriously violated international law, basic norms governing international relations and the related bilateral agreements, and sabotaged the China-Canada relations,” It added that “all consequences arising therefrom shall be borne by the Canadian side.“

China has the gall to tout international law? And they continued to wag their finger at us with, “we urge Canada to immediately stop unreasonable provocations. If Canada does not listen to the advice and acts recklessly, China will fight back resolutely and forcefully, and the Canadian side must bear all the consequences arising from this.”

Thanks for the advice but ................

Now we wait. Remember Trudeaus toughness with this issue? More than 70% of Canadians are calling for a public enquiry and what does Trudeau do? He appoints a friend as a special rapporteur to decide if there should be a public enquiry. Why do we need a special rapporteur to make a recommendation. Is it because Trudeau does not want one and he sees this as a way to wiggle his way out of exposing all the dirty laundry that may be piled up in the basket behind him?

The End

Times and technology have changed. This issue should be a grim wakeup call to politicians of all stripes that “honesty is the best policy.” With all the access we have, it is nearly impossible to keep a lid on an issue anymore. And we are not the unsuspecting public – we have brains, we have capacity to think and understand, and ultimately, we will make our decisions at the ballot box. That is our only we weapon against any politician who has the unmitigated gall to think they can continually lie to us and get away with it.

Government would have been better off telling us the truth – give us the facts because the facts matter. We can take it.

Best wishes from all of us.

Vancouver, Canada
