Enriching the Lives of First Nation Youth

Writer's picture: Wayne DruryWayne Drury

First Nation communities in Canada face many challenges due to historical injustices and other impacts. These challenges are intergenerational, and the Ehdiitat Gwich’in Council is doing its best to address them by delivering a child-centred Jordan’s Principle program.

The program is named after Jordan Anderson, who passed away while different levels of government argued over who would pay for the medical interventions he needed. The program aims to ensure that no First Nation child is disadvantaged because of a lack of funds.

In the small and remote First Nation community of Aklavik, Northwest Territories, Canada, located about 50 miles south of the Arctic Ocean, the Ehdiitat Gwich’in Council, with a team of dedicated people, is delivering a comprehensive Jordan’s Principle program to more than 150 of the community’s children and youth.

The uptake includes 99% of the community children, who have opportunities to participate in social, cultural, recreation, and education programs, all delivered to meet the children’s unmet needs and support their mental health and well-being.

Something happens daily, and we are excited to present this report on service delivery during November and December 2024. Our goal is to improve the children’s lives one heartbeat at a time.
