Trudeau's Travels

Justin Trudeau's lavish vacations are costing Canadian taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars while millions struggle with food insecurity. Enough is enough.  Time for the grifting to stop.

Trudeau has grifter long enough.  He not only gets a decent salary but will get a fantastic, fully indexed pension and has had the luxury of spending Canada’s dime taking many wonderful holidays.  Enough is enough.

I am frustrated and must get this off my chest.  This is a full-blown, maple-syrup-fueled rant about our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and his penchant for luxurious getaways.  All the trips paid for by you and me, and what I would have rather seen the money used for.

How many of us could afford to take a ski holiday across the country? I am not against the guy going skiing, but there are many places closer to Ottawa than having to fly to Kelowna and take a private helicopter to Rossland. Think of the inconvenience to his “handlers,” the police, who must traipse after him so he can have a great time. They are away from their families at Christmas.

Think about how many Christmas dinners his spending on personal benefits could have bought. There was the $84,000 trip to Jamaica last year, a trip to Tofino when the Kamloops Indians were dealing with the horrors of the Indigenous children’s graves, and now the Rossland trip. In total, the cost is in the range of $200,000. I suggest which is a conservative estimate that could have provided approximately 37,000 Christmas dinners to those in need.  Now, that would have been a respectful gesture and a great help to about two percent of the more than two million people in Canada who face food insecurity.

Picture this: It's freezing, and more than two million of our friends and neighbors are hungry and cannot afford adequate heat. The wind howls like a banshee, ice coats everything, and we are bundled up in three layers of wool, just trying to stay warm and wondering which can of Spam to open.

Meanwhile, our Prime Minister is taking helicopter rides to allow him to swish down the slopes.  Not a care in the world and certainly no care for us.

The National Post blew the lid off one such luxurious escape – an $84,000 Jamaican villa vacation over last Christmas!  Eighty-four THOUSAND dollars!  That’s enough money to buy over 15,000 Christmas dinners for those who desperately deserve it.

This wasn't some quick weekend jaunt to the cottage.  This was a lavish, all-expenses-paid holiday fit for a king...or, you know, someone who thinks it is fitting to rob the Canadian taxpayer piggy bank.

The Jamaica trip is just one; the Rossland trip is another to add to the long list of trips paid for with our dimes.  Remember the trip to London where he stayed in that exorbitantly-priced hotel?  Did we ever find out who was in the room with him?

For me, and I am sure many of you, Trudeau's vacation habits have been a source of ongoing irritation.  Every time we turn around, he’s jetting off somewhere exotic –  while we're stuck dealing with rising inflation, healthcare concerns, and the ever-increasing cost of everything.  The cost of groceries makes people choose between heating and eating – while Trudeau is choosing between a five-star resort in the Maldives or a private villa in the Bahamas.

The thing is, it's not just the sheer cost that bothers me. It's the principle. It's the feeling that the rules don't apply to him. It's the audacity, the sheer unmitigated gall, of someone enjoying an extravagant lifestyle on our dime while the rest of us struggle.

“But,” you might argue, “he works hard; he deserves a break!”  Well, we all work hard. We pay our taxes, follow the rules, and try to keep our heads above water.  A little empathy goes a long way, Mr. Prime Minister. But then, it is beneath you to think of those less fortunate.

I am not saying politicians should not have vacations. Everyone needs a break. However, the kind of luxury Trudeau indulges in, on our dime, while many Canadians struggle isn't right. It’s a slap in the face, a reminder that there is one set of rules for the elite and another for everyone else.

So, here’s my message to Prime Minister Trudeau: enough is enough!  We are not an endless ATM.  The next time you feel that urge to jet off to some paradise, remember the faces of those hardworking Canadians struggling to make ends meet.  Remember the folks freezing in their homes because they can't afford their heating bills.  Remember, the families skipping meals because they need to provide for their kids.

Think of the Canadian people paying for all of this.  This isn't a game; it is our hard-earned money.  I know it is too late, but it could be a lesson for the next Prime Minister to show fiscal responsibility and some respect.

Prime Minister Trudeau, have you ever had to decide whether to “heat or eat?”

Best wishes to all, and Happy New Year...
